Having A Bad Day?

Some days I need a little reminder to be grateful.  You know those days – you oversleep, can’t find your keys, forgot to pack the kiddos lunch last night, got to work late…… the list goes on.  When one of those “when will it ever end?” days seems to be taking over, just remember:

Then take a deep breath and remember that you get a fresh start tomorrow.

Try This! Cleaning The Dishwasher

The purpose of having a dishwasher is to make LESS work, right?  For the most part, mine does just that.  I assign one of the kids to empty and re-load it and it’s one less thing on my to-do list each day.  But sometimes (you knew there was a “but” coming, didn’t you?) the dishwasher starts to look like it needs a good cleaning itself and I find myself trying to get off all the stains and discolorations left from un-rinsed dishes and our hard water.

I was on Pinterest the other day (shocking, I know) and saw this neat tip.  I’m going to try it out and see if it really works the next time my dishwasher is empty.

Lemonade Kool-Aid as Dishwasher Cleaner Clean lime deposits and iron stains inside the dishwasher by pouring a packet of lemonade Kool-Aid (the only flavor that works) into the detergent cup and running the (empty) dishwasher. The citric acid in the mix wipes out stains; you don't have to.

I Will Be Grateful For This Day

Thank a Teacher Today

Today, I am thankful for my children’s school.  Last week, the Teenager started high school.  I was a nervous wreck.  She has to ride the school bus this year for the first time in her life because her school is a 25 minute drive from where we live, in another town.  We survived the first week and are slowly adjusting to this new stage.  This week, Peanut and the Boy went back to school. (Finally!!)  They have been ready for a while now – I can tell by the number of boredom complaints I hear each day – and are looking forward to seeing their friends again.  I am just looking forward to coming home each day to a clean kitchen.  :o)

Try This! Showerhead Cleaner

We have hard water at our house.  I’ve always found that description amusing.  How can water, which is a liquid, be hard?  But, as I was saying, we have hard water at our house and sometimes we get nasty hard water build up on things.  I can across this environmentally friendly and frugal cleaning idea on Pinterest the other day and thought I should give it a try next time I clean the bathroom.  Check it out:

You need:

-1/3 cup baking soda
-1 cup white vinegar
-1 plastic bag
-1 large bag twisty tie

Here’s what to do:

1. Mix baking soda and vinegar in bag over a sink. Caution: Pour vinegar into bag slowly, there is an “explosive” foaming action that kicks in.

2. Place bag over showerhead. Be sure it is submerged in the baking soda/vinegar solution.
3. Secure with twisty tie.
4. Let the showerhead soak in the solution overnight or for at least 2-3 hours.
5. Wipe off showerhead prior to use.

How simple is that?  There are great step by step photos (that’s their photo up above too) on the original poster’s site – Frugally Sustainable.com.  Let me know if you have any other frugal and friendly cleaning tips.  I’d love to ditch the cleaners under my sink in favor of some more eco and wallet friendly alternatives.
