Recipe For A Simple Life

Simplify your life, one day at a time

Wacky Words of Wisdom

Hahaha!  I’m totally a mom that would do this!  My husband is pretty laid back, but I wouldn’t hesitate to embarrass the crap out of my kids like this!  My oldest is 8, and as much as I don’t want to think that far ahead, it’s really not that far off.  I’ll start taking notes now.  😀  Oh my poor kids.  They are going to have SO MANY stories when they are older for family reunions 😀

Try This! Oatmeal Bread

I am learning to love my bread machine.  This week I tried a new recipe – Oatmeal Bread.  It was very good, and my family liked it, but it kind of fell apart when I took it out of the pan because it stuck to the sides.  (This is an ongoing struggle for me.  I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.)  I didn’t take a picture of my loaves because it was late when I took then out of the oven and I didn’t want to turn on the lights in the kitchen, but it came out shaped kind of flat, like the picture above.  (I also struggle just a bit with getting it to rise correctly in the transfer from bread machine to loaf pans, but I keep trying in the hope that someday I will figure it out.)

The recipe was for a 2-lb loaf, but I have smaller bread pans.  I made it according to the recipe, but split it into two smaller loaves for baking.  For me, this is the perfect size and it makes great sandwiches and toast for the kiddos.  Let me know if you try it and what you think.

Oatmeal Bread

Add ingredients to your bread machine in the order suggested by the manufacturer.  Makes one 2-lb loaf or two 1-lb loaves.

1 1/3 C. Quick Cooking Rolled Oats*

*Toast oats by spreading in a shallow baking pan and baking for 15-20 minutes in a 350 degree oven until light brown, stirring occasionally.  Add oats with the flour.

¾ C.   Milk

½ C.   Water

2 T.   Margarine

3 1/3 C. Bread Flour

¼ C. Packed Brown Sugar

1 tsp. Salt

1 ¼ tsp. Active Dry Yeast

If you let the bread machine bake the bread, select the whole grain or white bread cycle.  I turn mine out to rise in bread pans and let it rise 1″ above the pan, then bake for about 30 minutes at 350 degrees.

Do you have a favorite bread recipe you would be willing to share?

Winter Clearance

Have you found some great deals for winter gear and accessories?

Walmart has their boots for $5-10.  I usually try to buy 2 sizes bigger than what my kids are currently wearing.  I grabbed a pair for my daughter for $5.  Their winter accessories are 50% off.  So I snagged a pair for my youngest for $3.50.

A few weeks ago I bought a jacket for my oldest son at Herberger’s.  I can’t stand that my almost 8 year old needs MENS sized boots, and he’s currently wearing at least a size 12 in clothes.  They didn’t have much left, however I’d assume by now everything would be at a great price 😀

JCPenney actually surprised me on how many winter coats they had for boys sizes 4t-7.  I got a very nice coat for my second son for $15.  I’m sure I could find it cheaper, but it was a really nice one – one of those double coats where I can take out the inner jacket and he can wear it as a fall jacket.

Where have you found great deals on winter accessories?  Has anyone been to Once Upon a Child recently?  Sometimes they have fabulous finds at the end of the season!

Thrifty Thursday: Target Gift Card Challenge

My children get a lot of Target gift cards for birthdays and holidays.  It’s nice, because then we can save up for bigger purchases and have less clutter around the house.  The only problem is that the things they save for aren’t always at Target.  Right now, I’ve got $60 in Target gift cards in my wallet from this type of trade.  Over the next few weeks, I’ll be trying to see just how far I can stretch those gift cards.

My Target is re-modeling right now to add an expanded grocery department.  I am super excited because I like Target better than that other store across the street that starts with a “W.”  I’m hoping to find a lot of great deals while this re-model is going on.  Stay tuned to see how I do……….

Wednesday Wow: Re-use Old Magazines

Do you have a pile of old magazines that need purging?  Junk mail taking over your mailbox?  Here are some cute ideas that you can use to turn that mess into a masterpiece:

Rolled magazine cross!

The first one is a cross and looks a little delicate, but would make a nice wall decoration or a gift.  The original blog post that it came from (at least where I found it) with full directions is HERE.  I’m not sure if I have the patience to complete it, but it does look really nice and I can picture it in my house already.

The next one is a small basket type container and looks more like something I could do with the kids without losing my cool.  The link with detailed directions is HERE.  It also reminds me of something I saw in Hobby Lobby made out of Chinese newspaper a while ago.  I can picture this one on my new desk at work.

Easy-Weave Newsprint Basket

The best part of both of these projects, in my opinion, is that they don’t require you to go to the store to buy expensive supplies.  Just save your junk mail, expired weekly sales ads or old magazines for a few weeks and you’ll be ready to craft the night away.

Let us know if you try either of these and how they turn out.  Or, if you have a crafty and unique idea you’d be willing to share.  I might have to put these on my “Try It” list for March or April.  If I do, I’ll be sure to let you know how they turn out and whether or not they are kid friendly or not.

Haha – Who’s got kids that do things that make you wonder first of all – Why’d they do that?  Second of all – Why did they think that was such a good thing to try?  lol
